Since the game draws so heavily on the Iliad for inspiration each has appropriate personal goals, such as Menelaus getting his wife back, but you can also aim for more general (known) world-conquering objectives as well.
The gods may not be physically present in the game but heroes such as Achilles and Hector are represented as what they are: the ancient equivalent of a superhero. This works fine but we admit we would’ve preferred at least the option to fight alongside Ares and co., but there’s nothing like that here. The gods certainly don’t take part in battle and the minotaur is just a guy in a costume, in an obvious attempt to have your mythological epic and eat it. Although there’s surprisingly little historical fact to explain what went on during the siege of Troy, so this game is also the first serious Total War game to include supernatural elements.īefore any historians become too outraged the supernatural aspects are kept fairly low-key and amount to little more than perks and pseudo-magic spells that could, just about, be explained away by ordinary means.

Shogun 2 expansion Fall Of The Samurai was later retconned into being part of the series but Troy is potentially the most interesting entry, in that it’s focusing on a historical event far more people will be aware of and which has a very finite scope. It was fine but not terribly exciting in terms of either setting or the streamlined strategy options. Whereas the mainline Total War games can take place over hundreds of years, and across whole countries or continents, the first Total War Saga game was Thrones Of Britannia, which took place during the 9th century and only on the British Isles.
A Total War Saga is a spin-off series to the main Total War titles, smaller in scale when it comes both the size of the world map and time period it’s set in.
